BROOKSIDE -- The village will waive its yard sale fee during the annual Historic National Road Yard Sale set for May 31 through June 4.
The matter was discussed during Monday's Brookside Village Council meeting. Fire Chief Allan Ketzell III, who is also president of the park board, said the park board will not hold Community Days this year but requested council still waive fees for the annual National Road Yard sale.
Mayor Richard Kurner agreed, adding that the village typically waives the fee each year.
The village charges $2 for three days for residents to hold yard or garage sales within village limits.
During Ketzell's fire chief report he said the department is making progress in securing funding through the 2024 Congressional Directed Spending grant. Last month the fire department applied for a $2.5 million grant through the state for continued construction of the new firehouse and municipal building
Ketzell said he received a phone call from U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Ohio, earlier in the day Monday. At Ketzell's request, members of council wrote letters of recommendation to Johnson and U.S. Sen Sherrod Brown's (D-Ohio) office in March to support the fire department's efforts in securing the funding opportunity.
"We've made the first hurdle in the Congressional Directive Spending. It doesn't mean we've got the grant. It doesn't mean we got the money, it just means we made the first hurdle," he said.
Ketzell said he plans to invite Johnson to meet with council to show him the current firehouse/municipal building and the future location.
In other matters, Kurner said he wanted to put together a "concrete plan" regarding the flags or other ideas to honor local veterans. He said the current flags along the telephone poles in the village get tattered and unsightly quickly. He suggested purchasing American flags to station at various locations through town or purchasing a banner. He said each flag is around $140 and there are around 27 poles.
Councilman Paul West suggested placing flags only in certain locations throughout the village.
"Somewhere between the village limit and Patterson (Road), and then put one, if they'll let you put it in the yard over here before you get to Walnut. Then one on Brookside Avenue in the grass lot because then we don't have to get an OK to do that and one either at Wilson's or the cash advance place which is Wilson's, and one at the church," he said.
After some discussion, Councilwoman Sara Mudrick made a motion to purchase six to 10 flags, with a cost of up to $1,000. The motion was unanimously passed.
Council next meets at 6 p.m. May 8 at the municipal building located at 875 National Road.
