ST. CLAIRSVILLE -- Allen Pool at St. Clairsville Memorial Park is being drained and readied for swimmers to arrive on Memorial Day.
The public has noticed some red discoloration in the pool, but Councilwoman Linda Jordan, a member of the park board, said the situation is normal.
"That is just algae and it'll be drained. It may even change colors, they tell me, but that's all that is. From the rain," she said. "It opens Memorial Day weekend, so I don't foresee any issues. Right now it looks like it'll be opening on time. ... It catches rainwater and all that kind of stuff, then they clean it. Then they drain it out. Then they fill it. That's not water that anybody will be swimming in at any time."
Kate Banks, manager of the pool, said preparations are underway.
"We are on track to be open by Memorial Day weekend," she said. "It's a reddish brown, but that is a typical color for algae. I think last year it was green and the year before it was black. ... We don't drain the pool. Labor Day's our last day, and once we close down we stop adding chlorine so the pool just naturally turns colors."
Meanwhile, draining is on schedule during the last week of April.
"We plan on opening. Our first day should be May 27," she said, adding events will be scheduled. "We are in the process of having community days, things like that. Passes will go on sale starting in May at Riesbeck's in St. Clairsville and Kirke's Ice Cream."
Riesbeck's Food Market is located at Plaza West, and Kirke's Homemade Ice Cream is at 50525 Rehm Road.
Banks added that other improvements are in the works.
"We've purchased a brand-new diving board. Our one last year cracked, and we had a brand new diving board delivered last week," she said.
The pool is located at 200 Walnut Ave. It will be open noon to 6 p.m. daily, weather permitting. Adult lap swims are from 11 a.m. to noon. Children age 2 and younger are admitted for free. There are admission fees for all other ages. Cash only is accepted at the pool.
