WHEELING - Casey Hancock hadn't competed in the 5K Twin Pops Run for Health presented by Ziegenfelder in 10 years. He didn't fare too well in 2013.

Fast forward to Saturday morning when he was the first male to cross the finish line in a time of 17-minutes, 28-seconds, which was almost a half-minute ahead of second-place Caleb Bryniarski, of St. Clairsville, who timed out in 17:56. Martins Ferry's Justin Geery was a mere three seconds behind Bryniarski to take third.

"I ran this race 10 years ago. I improved my time by four minutes," the Wheeling native said. "I led from the start."

What was the deciding factor in the race?

"Everyone that is fast was entered in the half-marathon, so that made it a lot easier," the Wheeling Central graduate said. "I stick to the speed stuff, the slow stuff.

"The conditions were perfect to run in," the 30-year-old offered. "It wasn't too hot and there was a little breeze."

Starting at /week.
