Zervos sister act earns women’s 5K crown

WHEELING - A pair of sisters from Moundsville crossed the finish line together to win the female portion of the 5K Twin Pops Run for Health presented by Ziegenfelder on Saturday morning.
Zara and Zoe Zervos both clocked in at 19 minutes, 14 seconds, which was more than two-and-a-half minutes ahead of third-place Tina Seech, of Pittsburgh, who posted a time of 21:42.
"I had the perfect pacer," Zoe said of her older sister. "It feels pretty good. I feel very fast."
She said the conditions were ideal.
"It was sunny for the most part, but there was some shade," Zoe said.
Zara will be a sophomore next fall at West Virginia University, while Zoe will be starting her freshman year at John Marshall High School. Both run track.
"It feels great. It was a great day out here. Great environment. Great people. Great temperatures," Zara added.
Zara was a multi-sport athlete during her days as a Monarch, most notably in soccer where she scored more than 100 goals for her career.
"I ran this race with my dad when I was 6 years old. It's been a while since then, however.
The sisters led wire-to-wire and were never threatened en route to their title.
"Zoe just finished track season and being in college I didn't get to see her run, so we decided to do this together as the last race before summer."
