St. C. mayor picked for leadership conference

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Mayor Kathryn Thalman will be getting some tips on governance July 10-14, having been selected to attend a leadership conference.

She will be among 24 participants in the Ohio State University 2023 Ohio Public Leadership Academy for Elected Officials John Glenn College of Public Affairs. The guest list includes mayors, municipal council members, township trustees, school board members and Ohio House district representatives from across the state.

“I’ve been told I was one of five out of 900 and some mayors in the state who was invited to attend this conference,” she said Monday. “I’m very, very flattered and hopefully will come back with a lot of new ideas to put to use for our city.”

The themes include decision-making, engagement, leading in a crisis and crisis response, leading in adversity and encouraging the next generation of leaders.

According to the conference’s website, The Public Leadership Academy brings together a bipartisan group of rising Ohio elected officials to learn from each other and build lasting relationships across political boundaries.

The conference is for recently elected leaders. Thalman remains in her first term. Participation is by invitation based on nominations from state party leaders, Ohio House leadership, the County Commissioners Association of Ohio, Ohio Municipal League, Ohio School Boards Association and the Ohio Township Association.
