Candidates certified for November election
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Belmont County board of elections reviewed provisional ballots from the special election held Aug. 8 and finalized the candidate list for the Nov. 7 general election on Wednesday.
Deputy Director Kamron Chervenak said 78 provisional ballots were deemed valid and 35 were invalid and not accepted.
“That’s for various reasons. They weren’t providing ID or they had moved, that type of event. If someone doesn’t provide ID on Election Day they have four days to come in after the election and then provide it here in our office. That was why some were deemed invalid,” Chervenak said.
She added that if voters have moved and are registered in a different county, the board checks to make certain they did not vote in the other county.
She said the final certification will begin at 11 a.m. Monday, with board staff counting ballots. Chervenak said the actual certification will take place at 4 p.m., and that the regular board meeting. will be held at that time.
The board also approved candidates for the nonpartisan races on November’s ballot.
“There were 11 candidates that were not certified due to various errors on their petition, whether it was not completing the circulator statement, things such as not having enough sufficient ballot signatures on their petitions. There were a few candidates that were not registered at the address that they filed their petition,” Chervenak said.
“For these races, people can file to be a write-in candidate up until Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. The people that were deemed invalid cannot file to be a write-in for this November election,” she said, adding that the candidates deemed invalid can file with the board for reconsideration.
