Fall fun ahead in St. C area

Ghosts and ghouls will stalk the streets of St. Clairsville during the upcoming Halloween Bash, one of many fun fall events set for October.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Spooky fun highlights the slate of autumn events planned by the St. Clairsville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Belmont County Tourism office.

Chamber Director Wendy Anderson said the Art Walk through the city is returning from 5-8 p.m. Thursday. Anderson said 15 businesses have volunteered to host works by various artists. The walk will cover Main Street from the Presbyterian churches to Cedar One Realty.

“We have several people that’s interested in coming,” she said. “We have over 20 artists, from kids’ art at school to everyday artists.”

This is the second Art Walk. The first was in 2019. The chamber is partnering with the Main Street St. Clairsville small business association. Anderson said organizers welcome area artists.

“It is getting bigger. People are calling and wanting to put their art in. We’re kind of excited about this one,” she said. “It’s going to be everything from portraits to pencil to chalk to woodworking to earrings. It’s going to be anything you would consider art.”

Anyone wishing to get involved in the art walk is welcome to call the chamber of commerce at 740-695-9623.

From 5:30-8 p.m. Oct. 11, the chamber is putting on a Meet the Candidates Night at Shannon Hall at Ohio University Eastern. Anderson said so far, St. Clairsville mayoral candidates Kathryn Thalman, Linda Jordan and Bill Brooks have committed to attend, along with Councilman at Large Mike Smith. Allan Marangoni, running for Martins Ferry Board of Education, will attend along with three candidates for the St. Clairsville-Richland Board of Education — David Stack, Michael Fador and Floyd Marody. Ed Good, running for reelection as a Mead Township trustee, is also set to be on hand.

Anderson said there is time for more candidates to sign up.

Spooky fun is set for 5-7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 with the adult Halloween Bash in downtown St. Clairsville.

“We’ll have cash prizes, and that’s always fun,” Anderson said. “Anybody who wants to participate, if you’re a business and you don’t have a brick-and-mortar here in town and you want to participate, just call the office.”

Events will continue into the winter. From 4-8 p.m. Nov. 18 an ice rink will be set up in front of the Belmont County Courthouse in St. Clairsville with the lighting of the Christmas tree at 7 p.m.

The Belmont County Heritage Museum at 101 E. Main St. will also be involved in upcoming events. Curator Cathryn Stanley said it will be a stop on the Art Walk, with displays from the Ohio Valley Photography Club set up throughout October.

At 6 p.m. Oct. 20, storyteller Judi Tarowsky will be telling local ghost stories at the museum. During the Halloween bash, the Belmont County Spirit Seekers will be giving a demonstration of paranormal investigating equipment.

At 7 p.m. Oct. 21 and Oct. 28, the Spirit Seekers will be holding a Haunted St. Clairsville Lantern Tour, focusing on tragic events and notable people in the city’s past. The limit is 15 people per tour. It is not recommended for children younger than 10. Call the museum at 740-298-7020 for reservations.
