BRILLIANT — The Brilliant American Legion Post 573 is assisting graduates within the Buckeye Local School District as they embark on the next phase of their education.

Post Commander Deb Gilchrist said two $1,000 scholarships will be disbursed to eligible seniors attending Buckeye Local High School or homeschooled within the district.

Gilchrist made her announcement during Veterans Day services at the school on Nov. 10 and said the scholarship criteria include being a male or female student planning to attend an accredited college, community college or university.

The applicant also must be a child or grandchild of a veteran, have taken the American Legion Americanism Test and at least applied to attend Buckeye Boys and Girls State conferences.

The application deadline is April 1 and the scholarships will be given during this spring’s commencement exercises.

She said there was a time the post was unsure whether it would continue, but the tides turned and officials were able to continue its mission of serving the community.

“We want to give back, and one way is through scholarships. This is our first year,” Gilchrist said.

“A couple of years ago, we weren’t sure we’d be open. COVID did us a favor and we were able to regroup. We have a lot of programs and donations coming from the community. We will share our good fortune with the students and are offering two $1,000 scholarships.”

The post currently yields 103 members and has assisted veterans, students and other community members through its projects. Among them are American Legion Baseball, the Americanism Test for high schoolers and Buckeye Boys and Girls State activities each summer. Nationally, the Legion helped pass the American G.I. Bill to help military members continue their studies after serving their country, plus the organization has provided funds to caregivers supporting ill veterans.

“We have dinners that are open to all vets and work with the Brilliant Volunteer Fire Department to take out meals to those who can’t attend,” she added. “We also do Veterans, Memorial and Flag Day programs and teach fourth-graders flag etiquette.”

Gilchrist said the scholarships were just another aspect of extending support and BLHS Principal Luke Parsons was thankful for the contribution.

“We are so grateful for the American Legion. They always support the community, and now with the creation of two scholarships they are investing in the future. That is an amazing thing,” Parsons said. “Buckeye Local is a wonderful place and we will continue to strive for excellence, and getting there is easier when you have the support and love of wonderful organizations like the American Legion.”
