BEALLSVILLE — A story of sacrifice will be heard Friday as author Michael Price discusses his book “Everyone Has a Story: The Vietnam Conflict, One Ohio County, and 11 Untold Stories” with members of Beallsville American Legion and Auxiliary 768.

The presentation starts at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Beallsville Legion Hall. The hall is located at 52651 Broad Street off Ohio 147.

According to the Beallsville American Legion and Auxiliary’s Facebook page: “Price is an avid historian and author. He has written a book about the 11 sons of Monroe County who sacrificed their lives during the Vietnam War.”

The book tells the stories of young soldiers who were killed during the Vietnam War. Price focused on 11 soldiers from Monroe County, six of whom were from Beallsville.

Those six men are Duane Greenlee, Robert Lucas, Charles Schnegg, Jack Pittman, Richard Rucker and Phillip Brandon. All the young men were 19 or 20 years old when they lost their lives.

With roughly 400 residents at the time, the village of Beallsville had the highest per capita casualty rate of any U.S. community during the war.

Price is a graduate of West Liberty State University and an ordained minister. The book is available on the Barnes and Noble website. More information about Price and his books can be found at drmichaelprice.com.

Beallsville American Legion and Auxiliary will also host a Veterans Day celebration on Saturday.

The services will start at 11 a.m. at the legion hall, and a meal will be provided after the services. Just Plain Grass Bluegrass, a traditional bluegrass and classic country band from southeastern Ohio, will be performing from noon to 4 p.m., and a local band called The Muddle will be performing from 8:30 p.m. until midnight. The legion invites everyone to attend the event.

The organization will also participate in a Veterans Day assembly at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Beallsville School.

The legion is also preparing to participate in the Wreaths Across America program next month.

Wreaths Across America will host a ceremony at noon Dec.16 at Beallsville Cemetery to remember and honor all veterans.

Anyone can sponsor a wreath by visiting wreathsacrossamerica.org. Anyone who wishes to volunteer to participate in the wreath-laying ceremony can also register on the Wreaths Across America website.

The legion’s goal is to have 600 wreaths sponsored before the ceremony. Members are nearing their goal with 585 wreaths sponsored so far.
