BELMONT -- Village Council heard updates on road and waterline repairs on Thompson Road and paid tribute to former councilman Dan Scott this month.
Mayor Ron Woods informed council during its Nov. 1 meeting that Thompson Road had been "ditched and fixed" and that two waterlines to the village wells in that vicinity that had been discussed during the September meeting had been replaced.
Board of Public Affairs President Ken Davis went on to explain that the road had been crowned to help keep water from lying on it, that a large amount of debris had been removed from the ditches along the road before they were filled back up with stone, and that two culverts had been put in as well.
Davis said it is too late in the year to chip and seal the road.
Village Service Director Dave Orr noted that ripples and holes are already forming in a couple of spots where the road was repaired and said he thought more material needed to be added to the surface.
It was also noted that Orr had injured his shoulder while working on the project. Woods encouraged him to get it checked out if he wanted to do so.
During his monthly water report, Davis said that since the two wells on Thompson Road were shut down for the line replacements, the village had purchased 76% of its water from Belmont County during October.
This prompted Councilwoman Sarah Scott, who was just appointed to council in August, to inquire how the water system works and how the percentages are determined.
Davis explained that the village gets water from two wells off of Thompson Road as well as from the Belmont County water system through a connection on Ohio 149. He added that both wells are metered and read daily to help detect leaks and to determine the percentage that has to be purchased from the county, which he said fluctuates from month to month throughout the year.
He also noted that the No. 6 well is sampled by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency frequently as a source for a groundwater study.
Council President Derek Cain recognized former Councilman Dan Scott, who died on Oct. 27, for his many years of service and love for the village. Cain noted that Scott's wife, Kathy, would be lighting the village Christmas tree in his honor during a ceremony to be held Dec. 2.
Burkhead noted that Dan Scott was the only council member who did not resign when former Mayor Stan Sobel took office in 2015.
Also regarding this year's Christmas activities, Sarah Scott suggested organizers bring back the tradition of each family in the village having an ornament to place on the tree if desired.
Scott, along with Councilwomen Lorie Grob and Peggy Patterson, discussed how to make this happen with Scott saying she would put something together to post on Facebook.
Woods thanked everyone who helped make the annual Halloween festivities in the village a success.
It was noted that there had not been a report from the Village Cemetery Board Of Trustees in recent months, with Woods saying he would check in with board member Kaye Hall.
