ST. CLAIRSVILLE -- The Cumberland Trail Fire District responded to a fire at Mehlman's Cafeteria on Friday morning.

Cumberland Trail Fire Chief Tim Hall said the call for help came in at 9:49 a.m.

He said the first crew to arrive on the scene observed white smoke coming from the building.

Hall said the blaze started in an oven, and by the time firefighters arrived flames were starting to spread outside of the oven to the area beneath it.

"It was extinguished quickly," he added.

Hall said the structure sustained very little fire damage, but it did have some smoke and water damage as a result of efforts to battle the small blaze.

Hall said a fire crew helped the business owners ventilate the property after the flames were out.

Mehlman's was closed all day Friday and planned to be open during normal hours starting Saturday.

Hall said that the facility, located at 51800 National Road, St. Clairsville, will need approval from the Belmont County Health Department to reopen. The restaurant can be reached by phone at 740-695-1000.
