Polling locations see good turnouts Tuesday

BRIDGEPORT — Voters made their voices heard during Tuesday’s general election.

Poll worker Frank Shaffer said that his precinct, precinct 40 located at Bridgeport High School, had a great turnout.

“It’s been steady all day,” he said on site Tuesday.

Shaffer said he was glad to see so many voters come to the polls.

“Everybody should get out and vote,” he said.

He said there were no problems at the precinct and the machines were working well.

“We’ve had very little complaints and people have been in and out. It’s not taking very long,” Shaffer said.

He joked that the most difficult part of his job is staying awake until the polling place closes.

He said that the new ID requirements did not cause any issues.

“People are mostly showing their IDs right away out front. We’ve had no problems, and nobody’s been turned away,” he said.

The law states that in-person voters in Ohio must present a photo identification such as a driver’s license, state-issued ID or passport to vote. Previously, voters could use an official piece of mail with their address instead of a photo ID.

“It’s all been smooth sailing,” Shaffer said.

Shaffer said that this year will be “good practice” for next year’s presidential election.

Martins Ferry poll workers also said that turnout was good at their precincts and everything ran smoothly. They said that they did not want to comment any further due to restrictions from the Board of Elections. The polling location was at the elementary school gymnasium.
