MARTINS FERRY — Multiple fire crews responded to a tree fire in the area of Jaycee Manor apartments Thursday afternoon.
The blaze, which officials said may have been sparked by a transformer explosion, apparently proved difficult to control. The Belmont County Tanker Task Force was activated in an effort to contain the flames. Departments remained on scene at 3:45 p.m. and had access to the area blocked.
The National Weather Service had issued a special weather statement for the local region today, pointing to an enhanced fire danger. The warning said a combination of a very dry atmosphere and low fuel moisture would result in an enhanced danger this afternoon.
