POWHATAN POINT — Powhatan Point Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5565 and American Legion Post 228 of Powhatan Point hosted their first Wreaths Across America celebration on Saturday at Powhatan Cemetery.
According to Chuck Baker of VFW Post 5565 and Sons of the Legion Post 521, the organizations placed 1,118 wreaths on veterans’ graves there. Baker said that over 150 people attended the event.
“It was a big crowd,” he said.
Several local community members and veterans spoke at the celebration about freedom and service.
Larry and Kelly Kenney served as co-chairs and organizers for the event.
Wreaths Across America strives to encourage others to “remember, honor and teach” about what it means to serve their country, according to the organization’s website.
