Puskarich Public Library celebrates the New Year

CADIZ — Puskarich Public Library hosted its annual New Year’s Kids Party on Wednesday, complete with music, snacks, games, crafts and a countdown with a balloon drop.

This is the library’s second time hosting the event.

Karli Ray, children’s librarian, said the children had so much fun last year that the library staff decided to host the event again this year. Ray said children who attend events and activities at the library vary in age.

“We have quite the age range, and it’s always interesting to do things with different ages,” she said.

Most of the children at Wednesday’s event were in elementary school, and many of the others were in preschool. About 20 local children attended the New Year’s party this year.

At the start of the event, the children wrote down some fond memories from this year and made resolutions for next year. Many of the children wrote down vacation ideas and places they want to go to as their resolutions.

After the kids wrote down their resolutions, Ray filled plastic champagne flutes with dish soap, glitter and baking soda and added vinegar so that the flutes overflowed with bubbles.

In between activities, the children who attended the party danced. Dancing cartoon characters were projected onto a screen, and the children mimicked their moves.

The New Year’s Kids Party also featured painting. All children were given toilet paper rolls that were cut to look like fireworks and used them to stamp colorful paint.

Amelia, age 6, said that she enjoyed the painting the most.

The children in attendance then gathered for the countdown and balloon drop. They counted down from 10 while Ray released the balloons hanging from the ceiling. The children laughed and squealed as the balloons fell.

Ray also gave out noisemakers for the children to play with after the balloon drop.

At the end of the party, the children ate a snack of popcorn and juice. Many of them took a balloon home along with their noisemaker, painting and New Year’s resolution sheet.

In addition to the New Year’s party, the library is hosting many children’s events over the next few weeks.

This week, the library is having its “Five Days of Christmas Break” series. Children and families can stop in at any time during library hours to participate in a craft or activity.

Today, the library is hosting a button-making event from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Children who attend the event can use a machine to decorate buttons.

During business hours on Friday, anyone can visit the library to make and decorate a journal. Craft supplies will be provided.

Saturday will be the last “Five Days of Christmas Break” event. From noon to 1 p.m., children can visit the library and make a crochet craft. The Crochet Club, which is open to all skill levels, will also meet at that time so that adults can crochet along with their children.

Puskarich Public Library will be closed Monday for New Year’s Day.
