Gibson sentenced to four years for child porn, weapons charges

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Doug Gibson was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty Monday to fourth-degree felony pandering obscenity involving a minor and third-degree felony having weapons while under disability.

According to court records, Gibson, 48, of the Flushing area originally was charged with more than 50 counts related to pornography in 2022.

Belmont County Common Pleas Judge Chris Berhalter on Monday imposed a sentence of three years for the weapon charge and one year for the pandering charge, to run consecutively.

Belmont County Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Vavra elaborated on the case.

“Our local detectives received a notification that someone in the area may have had access or had been downloading or possessing child pornography. They did some background searching and found the IP address that was linked to a home. They executed a search warrant and discovered the items and the photographs and videos in question,” he said.

Vavra said the material was found on a computer and phone. He said there were more than 50 pictures and videos.

“For each individual photograph we charged,” he said.

“Under the legal definition of ‘sharing,’ he was. It was being uploaded to his cloud. It wasn’t being shared with anyone on the internet in general, but it was being shared or reproduced.

“He actually, while out on bond, committed new offenses,” Vavra added. “He pled guilty to one count of what’s called weapons under disability because he possessed a weapon while under indictment for a drug possession charge, so he pled guilty to that count, and he pled guilty to one of the pandering counts for possessing the child pornography.”

Vavra said a low-level drug charge was dismissed.
