BARNESVILLE -- Village Administrator Roger Deal updated Barnesville Village Council recently about the completion of the Slope Creek Waterline Project.
"Thank heavens the project is complete," he said, prompting a brief round of applause during the Jan. 29 meeting.
Deal noted the village can now feed the treatment plant with water from the Slope Creek Reservoir exclusively, without needing to supplement with water from Reservoir 1 or 2.
At a previous meeting, Deal had reported that the lines were being flushed in preparation to begin pumping water to the treatment plant, but that the telemetry communication system was not yet online.
In response to a question from Councilman Les Tickhill, Deal said that system is now functioning properly, with Tickhill noting that crews can now tell if the volume of water being pumped out of Slope Creek Reservoir matches what is being received at the plant, which was not possible before.
In response to a question from Councilman Brian Yarnall, Deal said the village does have staff working seven days a week, but not 24/7.
Meanwhile, council approved Deal's request to sign a contract for this year's fireworks display for the annual Independence Day celebration on July 6 with a rain date set for July 13. The contract is for $8,250, the same as last year's display, with Deal noting that organizers like to get signed up early to get their choice of dates.
Yarnall requested that the village not solicit for donations by mail, saying he thought the village could afford to pay for fireworks without doing so.
Deal said those letters did not go to everyone. Mayor Jake Hershberger, who runs Joe's Tires on East Main Street, noted, "I know businesses rely on reminders coming through the mail."
It eventually was decided to continue to send the letters to businesses and that individuals could give at the event where they customarily make donations anyway.
In other business, council approved a resolution to advertise for bids for the village to lease oil and gas rights and approved a building permit for the removal of fuel tanks at 153 S. Chestnut Street.
Yarnall and Councilman Steve Hill were reappointed to represent Barnesville on the Volunteer Firefighters Dependency Fund Board.
