BELMONT — Under the longtime direction of Sheri McElroy and with musical and backstage assistance from Amanda Griffith and Jim Ellis, Union Local High School’s Theatre Department aims to captivate audiences with its production of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.”
Set in a quaint French village, the story follows the adventures of Belle, portrayed by senior Sophie Talamonti, a bright and independent young woman who dreams of something more than her provincial life.
When Belle’s father, Maurice, played by junior Bailey Freeman, stumbles upon a mysterious castle in the woods and is imprisoned by the fearsome Beast, portrayed by senior Brody Roman, Belle offers herself in exchange for her father’s freedom. Thus begins an unlikely friendship between Belle and the Beast, as they navigate the enchanted castle filled with talking objects and magical wonders.
Among the castle’s enchanted inhabitants are Lumiere, the suave and charming candelabra, played by senior Carson Phillips, who leads the lively household in welcoming Belle. Cogsworth, the anxiety-prone clock, portrayed by junior Gilby Carpenter, ensures that order is maintained despite the chaos. Meanwhile, Mrs. Potts, the maternal teapot portrayed by senior Ella Alexander, offers comfort and wisdom to Belle and the Beast alike.
Adding to the enchantment are Madame De La Grande Bouche, the elegant wardrobe played by senior Norah Blecher, who brings a touch of sophistication to the castle’s halls. Chip, the endearing teacup portrayed by third-grader Olivia Griffith, adds youthful exuberance and innocence to the mix, while Babette, the flirtatious feather duster played by freshman Anna Twarog, infuses the castle with playful energy.
As Belle and the Beast spend time together, they begin to see beyond each other’s outward appearances and discover the beauty within. However, their budding relationship is threatened by the arrogant Gaston, portrayed by senior Nathan Grob, who seeks to claim Belle for himself at any cost. Alongside Gaston is his loyal yet dim-witted sidekick LeFou, portrayed by junior Pierce Luyster.
The tale will unfold on at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and during a matinee performance at 2 p.m. Saturday. Children under 3 years old will be admitted for free. All performances will be held at the Union Local Middle School/High School auditorium.
