U.S. Rep. Michael Rulli receives two House committee assignments

U.S. REP. Michael Rulli is serving on the House Judiciary Committee, and the House Education and the Workforce Committee.

“I look forward to fighting for better jobs, great opportunity and record growth for our region in these new roles,” said Rulli, R-Salem.

The Education and the Workforce Committee oversees education and workforce programs, including early learning through postsecondary education and skills development and retirement security. Its chairwoman is U.S. Rep. Virginia Fox, R-North Carolina.

The Judiciary Committee has jurisdiction over matters related to the administration of justice in federal courts, administrative bodies and law enforcement agencies. It also plays an important role in impeachment hearings. Its chairman is U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana.

Most of its members have law degrees. Rulli, director of operations for his family-owned Rulli Bros. grocery stores, does not. Rulli has a bachelor’s degree from Emerson College in Boston.

When Rulli won the June 11 special election, he said he wanted to get appointed to a seat on the House Energy and Commerce Committee or Ways and Means Committee, but he realized he probably didn’t have seniority yet for those assignments.

Rulli beat Democrat Michael L. Kripchak of Youngstown by 9.7% in the June 11 special election for the unexpired term of Republican Bill Johnson.

Johnson, who served 13 years in Congress and was a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, resigned Jan. 21 to be Youngstown State University president.

Rulli was sworn in on June 25 to finish the unexpired term.

Rulli will again face Kripchak in the Nov. 5 general election for a full two-year term.

The 6th Congressional District includes all of Mahoning, Columbiana, Carroll, Jefferson, Belmont, Harrison, Monroe, Noble and Washington counties and portions of Stark and Tuscarawas counties.

Mahoning is, by far, the district’s most-populous county.
