Sheriff Lucas warning of phone scam
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — A phone scammer in Belmont County is requesting personal information from people to obtain money.
According to Sheriff David Lucas, the scammer is calling residents and portraying that he is a deputy from the sheriff’s office. He reportedly tells them that they have missed jury duty and a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The caller tells his targets that they need to give their personal information and money to take care of the issue.
“Nobody will call you,” Lucas said of his staff. “If it’s a legitimate thing, we will come in person. We won’t call you. We won’t ask you for money, personal information.”
Lucas emphasized that if someone starts asking you for personal information to just hang up.
Chief Deputy James Zusack said since the office has been spreading word of the attempted scam, there have been no more reports of this scam.
