South student council committed to community service
TILTONSVILLE — Buckeye South Elementary’s student council is committed to serving its school and community with a bevy of projects throughout the year.
Adviser Jenny Potts said 10 fourth- and fifth-grade students have completed plans to benefit both people and animals since forming the council this year.
“This is the first year for the student council,” she said, adding that many of the projects were the student’s ideas. “We have helped the Oglebay Good Zoo by making seasonally themed animal enrichment for their habitats for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day and we also plan to do it for May 4. Everything has to be made with non-toxic materials, Crayola paints, school-safe glue and paper that are put into the animal enclosures.”
The council’s leadership includes Camryn Dutton as president, Kodie Roth as secretary and Julz Morelli as treasurer while members are Mallory Boughan, Gabby Gibbons, Evie Kendall, Olivia Hopkins, Jeremiah Gordon, Charlie Stingle and Addison Wilt. She said the council also collaborated with the kindergarten class for the JB Green Team’s Trashy Art contest and most recently wrapped up a special campaign for the Jefferson County Animal Shelter.
The group held a supply drive from March 17-April 7 and collected blankets, dog and cat toys, dog food, treats, among other goods, and the top class earned a “pawsicle” party for collecting the most items. Potts said the council was heavily involved with the organizing the event.
“They created flyers, were responsible for collecting the goods and keeping a tally and they’ll hold the party for the winners,” she continued.
Potts said the student council already has already begun formulating plans for the next school year.
“They want to concentrate on collecting pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House and we hope to continue our partnership with the zoo.”
