Belmont County escapes worst of weather’s wrath

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — While much of Ohio County was devastated by weekend flooding, Belmont County remained relatively unscathed by the weather.

Sheriff James Zusack said no major incidents had been reported as of Sunday evening. Likewise, Martins Ferry Mayor John Davies said the only weather-related issue he had learned of in the city was that a large tree came down on Saturday evening.

Although thunder could be heard in the distance Sunday afternoon and a round of heavy rain did strike the western half of the county on Saturday night, creeks and streams remained within their banks.

A torrential downpour around 3 p.m. did cause water to rush across Ohio 9 in several spots between St. Clairsville and Warnock, but the road did not become impassable.

A brief bout of flash flooding was reported a couple of hours later on social media in areas north of St. Clairsville. People posted that Barton Road and Crescent Road both flooded, but a short time later they added that the water had receded.

Traffic on Interstate 470 was disrupted during heavy afternoon rain showers when a tractor-trailer overturned on the curve just east of the I-470/I-70 split.

An Ohio State Highway Patrol dispatcher was unsure whether that accident was related to weather conditions.

She said the crash was reported at 3:23 p.m. The commercial vehicle was the only one involved in the crash, though another vehicle was struck by debris.

The semi-truck driver was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a “minor” injury, she said.

Eastbound lanes were closed entirely shortly after the crsh, she noted, and one westbound lane was shit down during the cleanup.

The highway reopened at 6:12 p.m.
