Exploring the extraordinary

Magical duo visits library as part of St. C. summer reading program “Color Your World Under the Big Top”

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Summer programming at the St. Clairsville Public Library on Wednesday evening had a different focus — a little hocus pocus and reading minds instead of books.

The Alans, a married magical duo who live in Akron, Ohio, performed for a crowd of about 35 adults. They entertained with a variety of parlor magic and mentalism, making sure to get plenty of audience members involved in their show.

Their appearance came as part of the library’s summer reading program, with the theme “Color Your World Under the Big Top.” The summer session, which kicked off Monday, includes activities such as a storywalk, a storybook scavenger hunt and a tie-dye party for all ages. For children and teens, it also offers summer story time, tech Saturdays, Adventures with Sky, RC cars, dream catchers and a stuffed animal sleepover. Adults can enjoy book clubs, technology training and crafting.

In addition to the performance by Jason and Stacy Alan, another special event is planned for 1 p.m. June 16 at the ECO Center featuring Team Zoom canine entertainment.

The program’s grand finale features an additional magician, Rick Everhart, at 1 p.m. July 23.

The Alans, who have performed alongside acts such as Chubby Checker and Eddie Money, took time after their show Wednesday to get better acquainted with the audience. They also discussed their two appearances on the TV show “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” — though they admitted they did not successfully fool the world famous pair.

Stacy hails from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, while Jason is originally from Salem, Ohio, and has local ties with a grandmother who calls Moundsville home.

Jason also talked about the importance of public libraries and said he wouldn’t be doing what he is today without them. He discussed how, as a child, he became interested in magic and started reading books about the topic at his local library.

The couple performs for corporate and private events as well as theater shows, and they also regularly provide entertainment aboard cruise ships.
