The Red Cross opens centers to assist those in need following floods
WHEELING — The American Red Cross has opened two distribution centers — one in Valley Grove and one in Triadelphia — to assist those in need following the June 14 flooding in Ohio County.
At the centers — one is at Roney’s Point Presbyterian Church and the other at Triadelphia Town Hall — those impacted by the flooding can inquire about assistance including financial help.
“We know we have a couple of hundred potential clients here in this area. So, we’re going to be looking at having that many that we’re going to be serving through this week. That’s why we have two locations so that people are able to easily get to either the Triadelphia Town Hall or Roney’s Point Presbyterian Church,” said Sharon Kesselring, executive director of the American Red Cross Ohio River Valley
The centers are open daily, 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., through Saturday.
The Red Cross’ help is just one of many national organizations pitching in to assist.
Disaster assistance volunteers from the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief are here to help, as are folks from Samaritan’s Purse and Eight Days of Hope. The Churches of Christ and Samaritan’s Purse volunteers are ready to get out in the field and help people rebuild, while Eight Days of Hope is assisting with counseling and other items.
For assistance from these groups, call 304-650-1175 for the Churches of Christ Disaster Relief Effort; Samaritan’s Purse at 1-833-747-1234; or Eight Days of Hope at 1-662-255-7565.
On Tuesday throughout the affected areas, those volunteering and helping neighbors continue to clean up from the mess were met with oppressive heat. Plenty of water was available, and cooling stations were set up throughout both communities.
The key right now, with a heat index around 100 degrees, is to get the mud removed before it hardens — and then becomes even more difficult to remove.
