Belmont County detectives help apprehend murder suspects

Fugitives wanted in two unrelated deaths were located in the local area

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Three individuals wanted for their involvement in two separate out-of-state homicides were arrested in the Ohio Valley.

On Monday, the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Interdiction Unit and Bellaire Police Department located 42-year-old Devin Roberts of Cleveland in a vehicle in Bellaire after a tip that said Roberts was hiding out in Belmont County.

Roberts had a warrant out of Cleveland for murder as well as probation violation charges from the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office. Belmont County Sheriff’s Office detectives followed Roberts until units from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Marshals Service were able to safely take him into custody in Brilliant.

According to a press release by the Marshal Service, on June 16, Cleveland police responded to gunshots in the area of Parkgate Avenue and East 105th Street. When officers arrived, they received information that one victim had been shot and that the suspect was possibly located in a home nearby. The victim of the shooting, De’Ante Kidd, 34, was found deceased on the porch of a home on Parkgate Avenue.

Cleveland SWAT responded to a second location, where they believed the suspect to be. At the time, the suspect Roberts was not located. A warrant was issued for Roberts’ arrest, and the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force began searching for him.

“This suspect has brought violence and fear to the Cleveland community. We are thankful for the dedicated work of the Detectives in the Cleveland homicide unit as well as the quick actions by members of our task force and in West Virginia. The suspect is behind bars and the communities are safer,” U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said.

Roberts will remain in custody until he can be extradited back to Cleveland for the charges against him.

On Wednesday Belmont County Sheriff’s Office was again notified of another murder suspect possibly in Belmont County. Several detectives from the sheriff’s office were able to locate two suspects at a local hotel in St. Clairsville: 37-year-old Michael Coury Pyles of New Martinville and 29-year-old Alexis Podlasiak of Powhatan Point. They are suspects wanted in connection to a murder in the Washington, Pennsylvania, area.

Sheriff’s detectives and road patrol units were able to take both subjects into custody without incident, and both are being held in the Belmont County jail on multiple charges.

“I mean, you have three different people wandering from two different areas for murder charges that our office was contacted and were involved in safe apprehension for those suspects to close cases in other jurisdictions,” Belmont County Chief Deputy Glenn Moore said. “They were hanging out here, and we just for public safety … know we’re constantly working to make sure that our folks, our constituents and residents are safe, as well as the victims and the victims’ families can receive justice on their behalf with our help.”

It was also reported that a small child was with Pyles and Podlasiak when they were arrested.

Belmont County Children Services came to the scene and took custody of the child.

Sheriff James Zusack added that he is proud of the hard work and dedication of the men and women of the Belmont County Sheriff’s Office. He said they are always up to the challenge.
