Flushing reorganizes after 3 council members resign

FLUSHING–The village government recently began the process of regrouping following the resignation of three council members last month.

During a scheduled council meeting on June 12, Mayor Preston Eberhart explained that the May 8 meeting had been canceled due to the sudden resignations of Council President Chuck Nucci and Councilwoman Erin Nucci along with the absence of another council member, leaving council without a quorum. Eberhart added that Councilman Eric McCort turned in his resignation ahead of the rescheduled meeting date of May 15, which was subsequently canceled as well, adding that he had been unable to convene a meeting with the remaining three council members to work on filling the open seats.

Eberhart said that since 30 days had elapsed since the first two resignations, he would be filling those seats by appointment. He then announced that he had chosen former mayor and councilman Angelo Vincenzo to fill the seat with a term expiring at the end of 2025 and former village administrator and councilman Bryan Clark to fill the seat with a term expiring at the end of 2027.

Both Chuck and Erin Nucci were at the June meeting, and Chuck Nucci explained that negative and threatening social media posts had prompted his resignation.

“You have a group of people sitting up here, regardless of who it is, trying to do the best they can for this village, and you have people condemning everything that’s being done or saying that it’s not being done right,” Nucci said.

He went on to reference specific Facebook posts, which he claimed contained threats of throwing bricks through the village office windows as well as attempts to organize demonstrations against the village government.

Erin Nucci echoed her husband’s reasons for resigning, saying the negativity was “disheartening,” but that she was hopeful that the project to have proper bathrooms constructed in Schuler Park would be completed.

Eberhart thanked the Nuccis for their time serving the village, saying he felt that they had presented a lot of good ideas and input during that time, agreeing with Chuck Nucci’s statement that more people should seek to serve the community.

Chuck Nucci discussed with council events being planned by the Flushing Business Association, asking members to make sure that arrangements were in place for a music and food truck setup downtown to coincide with the fireworks display at Mt. Zion Retreat and RV Park on July 3.

Nucci later said that the business association, which he heads up, was planning monthly “Music in the Village” to be held on the first Fridays featuring food vendors and entertainment.
