School district honors helpers

BRIDGEPORT — The Bridgeport Exempted Village School District honored two special contributors during the June 30 meeting.

The board of education recognized Harley Johnston, who had served as resource officer for nine years until his retirement at the end of the school year. Superintendent Brent Ripley said Johnston was a steady presence, insuring security and inspiring confidence.

“Everything flowed so smoothly while you were here, it seemed effortless, but there was a lot of work that always goes into that,” he said. “Thank you for your service.”

Ripley said Johnston contributed to the Bulldogs’ culture of integrity.

“We were lucky to have you for such a long time,” he said. “You’ve been wonderful for our kids and have always been all-in for Bridgeport.”

Johnston became emotional as he recalled his time at Bridgeport Schools.

“They’re great. I couldn’t ask for better students, better faculty, staff, everyone. It’s a great place to work.”

Board of education member Patrick McConnaughy said Johnston would be missed.

Johnston has been in law enforcement since 1977. Since retiring, he has enjoyed traveling and visiting family.

“I had wonderful times here at Bridgeport.”

The board also named Belmont County Department of Job and Family Services Director Jeff Felton an honorary Bulldog for his help in securing the grant dollars for the state-funded multipurpose facility dubbed “the Bridge” and currently under construction. Ripley said Felton played an important role. Felton became associated with Bridgeport Schools through the district counselor, Vicki Falcone.

“You’ve made a huge impact on our grant application. I am thankful that Vicki Falcone introduced us all. Your work and support means the world to our District and all of Belmont County.”

Felton has worked in Children’s Services since 1986. Ripley said Felton has worked behind the scenes to benefit the lives of young people throughout his career.

Felton said the most important quality for those working in both the fields of children’s services and education is to care. He saw the potential for the Bridge early and was enthused for the project.

“It’s an exciting thing. It’s a good thing to be part of and thank you for including me.”
