Bellaire murderer’s parole hearing moved to November

BROOKS

BELLAIRE — Belmont County Prosecutor Kevin Flanagan confirmed Wednesday that the parole hearing for Nathan Brooks, serving life in prison for the brutal murder of his parents in Bellaire, is postponed until November.

Flanagan said he was informed that the parole hearing was rescheduled from Wednesday to November but was not provided any additional information.

“We were notified that they were moving into November with no further explanation provided,” he said.

Brooks was a 17-year-old Bellaire High School student when he murdered his parents on Sept. 30, 1995. Now 47 years old, he is serving life in prison at the London Correctional Institute in London, Ohio, after he was convicted of two counts of aggravated murder and one count of using a firearm while committing the murders.

Brooks killed his father, Terry, and mother, Marilyn, in their home in what he professed was a satanic ritual. He shot his father then decapitated him with a hacksaw and placed his head in a punch bowl. He stabbed his mother to death.

He was arrested later along Riggs Road after his brother, Ryan, contacted police when he discovered his parents’ bodies early the next morning.

Once police searched Brooks’ home, a list of names of various members of the community he apparently planned on killing was found. After police discovered the list, Bellaire officials canceled trick or treat out of concern for village residents.

Brooks will first go before a division of the parole board in November. If that division recommends his parole, Brooks will then go before the full board. Flanagan previously said that he does not believe Brooks will be granted parole due to the severity of the case.

Flanagan said he was preparing to be on a video call for Brooks’ hearing Wednesday when he was notified that it had been moved to November.

“We had previously submitted a letter requesting that parole be denied,” he said.
