Holiday weekend in the Ohio Valley to be filled with fun activities

WHEELING — With the long Labor Day weekend upon the Ohio Valley, there are plenty of activities throughout the region for families to enjoy as the summer season winds down.

Many of those activities will be found this weekend at Oglebay Park Resort. Not only will the traditional Fort Henry Days festival be held, but several other events are on the docket. Fort Henry Days, to run Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the resort’s Levenson Shelter and Camp Russel, brings visitors face to face with how 18th century life was led in the Ohio Valley.

Those who walk through the festival site will see blacksmithing, needlework and tanning, along with “Punch and Judy” children’s shows and food and brewing discussions and demonstrations. The highlight of the festival comes at 3 p.m. each day with a reenactment of the Battle for Fort Henry at the lower field at Camp Russel. Reenactors in period costume will portray settlers, including Betty Zane and her run for the gunpowder, British soldiers and Native Americans.

The fun isn’t sequestered to Fort Henry Days. The resort has a full menu of events for visitors to see. Among them is the annual Woodcarver’s Show at Oglebay’s Pine Room from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Master woodcarvers from across the country will populate the Pine Room showing off their creations. — Art in Action

Watch master woodcarvers from across the country showcase their skill at the Pine Room, presented by the Oglebay Woodcarver’s Guild. Explore one-of-a-kind creations available for purchase Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday at Oglebay’s Schenk Lake will feature a foam party and kid’s fun zone from 5-7 p.m. and, at 7 p.m., the Americana Skydivers will freefall from 12,000 and land around the lake. On Sunday, music lovers will be able to enjoy the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra’s Music Under the Stars and its “Movie Magic!” performance, at 7:30 p.m. at the Oglebay Amphitheatre. The performance will pay tribute to some of the most memorable songs from the silver screen. Right after that concert, the resort sky will light up with a fireworks display over Schenk Lake.

The Highlands Sports Complex will be hopping Saturday with its celebration, “Stronger Together,” honoring the complex’s fifth anniversary. From 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the complex, located at 225 McCormick Way at The Highlands, families can enjoy free sports clinics as well as pickleball and cornhole tournaments, as well as an Ohio Valley Roller Derby competition that is free to watch at 1:30 p.m. A portion of the process from the day will go to Ohio County flood relief. Registration for the clinics and tournaments can be found at highlandssports.com.

The West Virginia side of the Ohio River isn’t the only spot for Labor Day weekend entertainment. Ohio organizations will present multiple events. Baseball fans, especially those who appreciate the sport’s history, can visit the Old Timers’ Baseball Festival through Sunday at 421 E. Main St. in Holloway. The festival will include, on Saturday, an old-school baseball game at noon, a car, truck and bike show from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and a parade at 5 p.m. Sunday brings garden tractor pulls starting at 9 a.m. Chance auctions, raffle tickets, food and more will be available.

And on Monday, St. John’s Church at 415 37th St. in Bellaire will host a car, truck and bike show from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Entry fee is $10. Registration goes from 10 a.m.-noon, with judging starting at 11 a.m. and awards presented at 3 p.m. The show will provide dash plaques, door prizes and awards for best in show, best bike and Top 20.
