National Night Out aims to create new bonds in two local communities today

BRIDGEPORT — National Night Out is a way for area police departments to help officers become friendly and familiar faces to the youth of the community.

National Night Out is in its 42nd year with the first official event held nationwide in 1984.

Bridgeport Assistant Police Chief Darby Copeland said his department has been involved in the national program since 2019, and he believes the event helps the children in his community know who they should go to when they are in need of assistance.

“It really gives us an opportunity to connect with the community, and particularly the kids, and to let them know that law enforcement is here for them,” Copeland said.

“When you have those relationships, it makes it much easier to communicate during difficult times.”

Bridgeport’s event will take place from 6-8 p.m. today at Perkins Field and is free for anyone to attend.

Copeland said there will be bounce houses, free school supplies, pizza and drinks for everyone to enjoy.

HealthNet will be landing one of its medical helicopters on site for attendees to view and learn about.

In addition to HealthNet and Bridgeport police, Brookside Volunteer Fire Department and Bridgeport Fire Department members will be in attendance to meet community members.

Copeland added that the event is always a great time and said he looks forward to seeing people from throughout the community at Perkins Field.

Meanwhile, the Wheeling Police Department and several community partners invite the public to participate in its version of the National Night Out from 6-8 p.m. today at Wheeling Park’s Ice Rink.

The annual community-building campaign promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.

The nationwide event, held each year on the first Tuesday of August, provides an opportunity to bring police and the community together under positive circumstances.

The relaxed, fun-filled “night out” is geared toward enhancing relationships between residents and law enforcement to make neighborhoods safe.

The evening also allows people to learn about anti-crime awareness programs in the city, such as neighborhood watch meetings and the citizens’ police academy.

During the free two-hour event, Wheeling Police Department will showcase its many units and divisions, including a demonstration from its K-9 Unit.

Pizza, popsicles, snacks and drinks will be provided, and several displays from various local support agencies will also be part of the event.
