Sentencing continued for former Belmont County coroner Balgo
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — It remains unclear when former Belmont County coroner Troy Balgo will be sentenced for committing healthcare fraud, and he is now seeking to serve his time under house arrest.
Balgo was scheduled to be sentenced in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio by Judge Michael H. Watson in Columbus on Tuesday afternoon.
His sentencing was continued, though, due to an addendum filed Monday by his attorney, David DeVillers of the Columbus law firm Barnes &Thornburg LLP.
The addendum to Balgo’s sentencing memorandum includes a letter from the family’s primary care provider, nurse practitioner Kim Hupp, along with supporting documents that include information about the health of Balgo’s wife, Deedra Balgo. Hupp states in the letter that due to Deedra’s medical conditions, she is not capable of providing the necessary care to their two autistic adult sons by herself.
Troy Balgo was arrested in 2019 as part of a federal drug investigation.
He initially was charged by the U.S. Department of Justice with one count of healthcare fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, six counts of unlawful distribution of controlled substances and one count of conspiracy to commit the unlawful distribution of controlled substances.
