Multi-vehicle crash snarls traffic on I-470 near W.Va.-Ohio border

WHEELING — A crash involving multiple vehicles Tuesday afternoon left Interstate 470 near the West Virginia-Ohio border at a near standstill and sent two people to the hospital.

According to Wheeling Police Department spokesman Philip Stahl, the crash occurred just before 1 p.m. Tuesday near Exit 1 of I-470 West. It involved six vehicles, Stahl said – three tractor-trailers, two passenger vehicles and a service vehicle.

A man and a woman were trapped in one of the passenger vehicles, which was wedged between one of the tractor trailers and the barrier of the interstate. The Wheeling Fire Department was able to extricate both from the vehicle and transport them to WVU Medicine Wheeling Hospital. Stahl said both were conscious and alert when they were rescued.

I-470 West was closed at the I-70/I-470 split in Elm Grove so the WPD crash reconstruction team could complete its investigation, Stahl said. One lane of I-470 East was closed near the crash site.

There were discussions about bringing in a medical helicopter, but the weather prohibited the copter from taking to the air, Stahl said.
