Annual Light Up Night slated for Saturday in St. Clairsville

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Despite a rainy forecast, the St. Clairsville Area Chamber of Commerce is turning Main Street to a winter wonderland on Saturday.

The annual Light Up Night will take over Main Street from 4-8 p.m. Saturday. Santa will be lighting up the large Christmas tree that will be erected in front of the Belmont County Heritage Museum next to the Belmont County Courthouse along Main Street.

Executive director Lisa Kindler said that the police department will be closing Main Street from noon until 10 p.m. for setup and cleanup.

The event will see the return of free ice skating, as well as bounce houses and a trackless train that will provide rides up and down Main Street. Kindler said 20 area vendors will be selling holiday-related items in what will be called Vendor Village. There will also be six food trucks as well as food being provided by the restaurants that are located on Main Street.

This year’s event will see the addition of a large 30-foot projector screen showing the movie “Elf” in WesBanco’s parking lot. The parking lot will also have free hot cocoa, popcorn and cotton candy. A 10-foot propane fire pit will also be in the WesBanco parking lot, providing attendees an area to warm up during the event.

“Santa wasn’t able to send his real reindeer this year, so we will have our Christmas cows that will be making an appearance,” Kindler said.

She added that the Christmas cows are Highland cows which are fluffy and attendees will be able to pet and take pictures with them.

“They should be decorated for Christmas, so they’re going to make for a cute little addition,” she said.

This year’s Christmas tree was donated by residents Fred and Cynthia Caruth.

“They planted that tree when it was only one foot tall in their yard, and that tree grew to be 40 feet tall,” Kindler said. “They were very excited to donate the tree to the city. They were so excited because they’ll be able to have their grandkids take pictures in front of it.”

She added that not only the Caruth family will enjoy that tree, but the whole community gets to enjoy having something that was grown in the city. The city has been hosting light up night events for more than a decade, and Kindler said that, each year, the chamber tries to make the event bigger and bigger.

“Each year we try to do bigger, better, and different things. I don’t think this year is going to disappoint, we’re going to have a really great year. It’s going to be very festive,” Kindler said. “We have a lot of people interested in coming, and it’s just a great family event for the community that we’re really proud to be holding.”
