Ohio voters head to the polls

Voters across Ohio will head to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in local elections across the state. Polls open across the Buckeye State at 6:30 a.m. and will close at 7:30 p.m.

In Belmont County, there are plenty of offices up for vote on the ballot, but the majority of the races are uncontested. Still, some important positions will be up for grabs and several levies will be decided upon Tuesday.

Shadyside will decide its next mayor and its village council among a crowded field. John Nick Ferrelli and Mike Meintel will vie for the mayor’s seat. Shadyside voters can pick up to six candidates out of a 10-person field. That field includes Sam Carpino, Lisa Duvall, Robert Gorrell, Melanie Haswell, Dustin Heath, Richard Loew Jr., John D. Longwell and Brandon Parr, as well as write-in candidates Robert Dorris Jr. and Carol Givens.

The Martins Ferry at-large council seats are up for grabs, with four candidates up for three seats. James Agnew, Gus Harris, Jim Schramm and write-in John R. Rodgers are in that race.

There is one contested race among the four wards for St. Clairsville Council. The fourth ward has Terra Butler going up against Mike Kasper.

Barnesville’s council race is another crowded field, with seven people up for four seats. Brad English, Tony C. Johnson, Mark Lucas, Tim McKelvey and Leslie Tickhill are joined by write-in candidates Cole Carpenter and Lindsay Taylor Dowdle.

The Bethesda Village Council race is another with seven people running for four seats. Cynthia Foose, Shirley Lucas, Carol Ann Merritt, Ruth A. Saffell and Jay Van Horn are joined by write-ins Cal Kildow and Charles Little. In Fairview, five people – Lora Cunningham, Connie Jean Gibbons, Greg W. Gibbons, Ashley McConnell and James R. Steele – are up for four seats. In Yorkville, five candidates – Doug DelVecchio, Cindy Norman, Bill Reasbeck, David Spong and Robert Zitzelsberger – are vying for four village council seats.

Four school boards in Belmont County will be decided in contested races. In the Bellaire School District, Jim LaRoche, Susie Rataiczak, Jim Thoburn and Michael Wallace are in the hunt for three board seats. In the Harrison Hills City School District, Julie Dickerson, Shellie Henderson, Deborah Kenny, D.J. Watson and Kristen Willis are contending for three seats.

In the Shadyside Local School District, Michael Derosa, Shannan L. Hildebrand and Joel Traylor will compete for two seats. And in the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District, Steve Jorris, Anthony McDaniel and Ken Phillips will be joined by write-in candidate E. Darby to vie for two seats.

Property tax levies will be decided in communities throughout the county.

– Belmont County has a 1.25-mill levy on the ballot that will fund mental health services in the county.

– The Village of Belmont has a 3-mill levy up for vote that would fund the village’s police department.

– Powhatan has a 3-mill levy on its ballot that would fund operating the village’s swimming pool park and improving the pool and park’s equipment and facilities.

– Shadyside has three levies on the ballot: 1.35 mills, 1.9 mills and 2.5 mills, all for current expenses.

– Flushing has a 2.5-mill levy on the ballot that would fund fire protection through the township’s volunteer fire departments.

– Goshen Township has three levies on the ballot: 1.3 mills for general construction, reconstruction, resurfacing, repair and maintenance of roads and bridges excluding those in the villages of Belmont and Bethesda; 1 mill for fire protection within the entire township and 0.5 mills to provide fire protections to township residents excluding those in Belmont and Bethesda.

– The Union Local School District has a 2-mill levy on the ballot that would fund permanent improvements to its facilities.
