ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Senior Services of Belmont County recently received a $500 donation from American Legion Post 159.

During the Belmont County Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday morning, executive director Lisa Kazmirski thanked not only Post 159 for its kindness, but all Belmont County American Legion posts.

“All of the Legions in the county are very active with our seniors and the senior centers. We try to establish a good partnership with all of them so that we can help them with awareness of what’s going on at their legions, so our seniors can go and support them,” Kazmirski said. “And in return, every now and then, we get a donation towards an event like a Christmas party, or towards some shelf stable meals, and things of that nature.”

She added that she is appreciative of the donation and plans to put the money toward something nice for the seniors.

“We try to give back to them as much as we can, and it was very nice to receive this at the end of the year, we can put it out towards the seniors to do something nice,” she said.

American Legion Post 312 post commander John Waugh was in attendance at the commissioners meeting and said that his post always appreciates everything Kazmirski does to bring awareness to its annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser.

“I want to thank her for her support, we did very well at our last spaghetti dinner to keep the Legion open for another year,” Waugh said.

Commissioner J.P. Dutton said that senior service has a lot of great partnerships within the community.

“I can’t say enough about the work that you and your staff does with maintaining those great relationships and developing new relationships,” Dutton said. “There’s a lot of ways that Senior Services touches various parts of the community, outside of the basics, which is, meal delivery for those 1200 meals a day, but there’s a lot of other things that happen in the department. We appreciate it very much.”

Dutton then made a motion to approve the purchase of a 2025 Ford Escape from Hill International for $27,726 for Senior Services based upon Kazmirski’s recommendation.

He added that the vehicle will be used for non-emergency medical transportation and will be paid for from Senior Services of Belmont County’s regularly operating budget.

“We have over 50 vehicles operating every day at Senior Services. So we try to stay a step ahead, and as they get to the end of their usefulness, we trade them or send them to auction if they’re in a shape that doesn’t warrant a good trade,” Kazmirski said. “This particular SUV will be more practical for some of the locations we need to get to certain Belmont County seniors.”
