Convicted murderer Nathan Brooks denied parole

MARTINS FERRY — Nathan Brooks, who brutally murdered both his parents in September 1995, won’t be getting out of prison anytime soon.

Belmont County Prosecutor Kevin Flanagan said that the Ohio Adult Parole Authority denied early release to Brooks and scheduled another hearing in 10 years.

Flanagan added that a new date had to be given under the current law and that ten years is the longest period of time before another hearing could be scheduled.

Brooks, now 47, is serving a life sentence at the London Correctional Institute, convicted of two counts of aggravated murder and one count of using a firearm while committing the murders. He killed his mother Marilyn and father Terry on Sept. 30, 1995, when he was a 17-year-old Bellaire High School student.

The self-professed Satan-worshipper shot his father, decapitated him with a hacksaw and put his head in a punchbowl. He then stabbed his mother to death. Police arrested Brooks along Riggs Road after his brother Ryan called them after finding their parents’ bodies early on Oct. 1.

Further investigation after Brooks arrest led to the discovery of a list of names in his room of numerous community members that he had planned on killing. That discovery led Bellaire officials to cancel trick-or-treat out of concern for the safety of the village’s residents.

Flanagan said that he was pleased with the outcome and noted that just because another hearing is scheduled in 10 years does not mean that parole will be granted.

“Setting a date now is necessary under the statute,” he said.” The parole authority has no choice but to do so. In ten years, the process will start over with the board reviewing evidence, letters and institutional records before rendering a decision.”
