David Schafer announces candidacy for commissioner
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Lifelong Belmont County Republican resident David Schafer — who has more than three decades of experience in transportation, infrastructure and public service — announced his candidacy for Belmont County Commissioner.
“Belmont County is my home,” Schafer said. “It’s where I was raised, where I built my career and where my wife Teresa and I happily raised our family. Public service is a career passion of mine and serving my community while helping to produce results has been extremely rewarding. I believe serving the public should always be about the people.
“I’m running for County Commissioner to continue to strengthen our economy, through infrastructure and job creation while serving Belmont County with integrity, cooperation and practical leadership.”
Schafer’s professional career spans decades of service in transportation and public administration where he earned a reputation for experience, dependability and results. He dedicated 32 years to the Ohio Department of Transportation — working closely with local officials and community leaders on major infrastructure and development projects across Belmont County.
Before entering public service, Schafer worked in the coal industry, and he said that experience shaped his work ethic and gave him a deep appreciation for Belmont County’s energy heritage and the importance of responsible energy development.
In addition to his professional career, Schafer previously served as Chairman of the Belmont County Republican Party and is a member of the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference, working closely with schools and community leaders throughout the region. He has also been involved with youth sports for many years.
As County Commissioner, Schafer said his top priorities will include attracting and creating good-paying jobs, supporting responsible economic growth, investing in infrastructure, and working with local businesses and energy partners to expand opportunities for families and future generations in Belmont County.
“Belmont County deserves experienced leadership that places the community first,” he said. “My goal is simple to continue to strengthen Belmont County — together.”
David and his wife Teresa have raised their family in Belmont County. They have two sons, Jeremy and Justin, and five grandchildren. Schafer says his most treasured title is “Pops.” They remain deeply invested in the future of the community they proudly call home.
