St. C. streets department uses bulldozers to remove snow from city sidewalks
Street superintendent Darim Pytlak said that his crew has been removing snow on Main Street throughout the week with bulldozers.
“It was just built up from us plowing everything from the last snowstorm and then businesses and property owners cleaning their sidewalks off,” Pytlak said. “It just gets to the point where there’s too much there and we can’t push it over any more.”
Pytlak added that parking became an issue with vehicles not being able to get close enough off the street into the actual parking spot.
“It was time to remove all this snow,” Pytlak said. “We pulled back what we could. I mean, I’m not saying there isn’t still some snow left up there around some of the poles and things of that nature. But we pretty much cleared from one end to the other.”
Pytlak said the recent clearing efforts provide a place to put the snow that fell on Friday.
“It’ll allow us to be able to put more snow there … and then also that the business owners will have somewhere to throw their sidewalk snow as they clean up,” he said.
Pytlak said snow and ice control will not be as daunting as it was following the recent massive snowstorm that led to nearly a foot of accumulation, but advised motorists to use caution on the roadways.
“We’re keeping up with it,” Pytlak said. “This wasn’t a big one like it was last time. But there will definitely be some slick spots.”
Pytlak commended his entire staff for the hard work and dedication they have put forward since the snowstorm.
“They’ve been great this year. We’ve obviously had a lot more snow than we normally have and they’ve done such a great job with the major snowstorm that we had last month and throughout all of this season in terms of snow removal,” Pytlak said. “I can’t thank them enough. They make my job a lot easier.”
He added that it took his department roughly three days to clear the snow off from Main Street which was made easier by temporarily closing a lane of traffic while working to remove the snow.
City council member Mike Kasper recently voiced his concerns at a council meeting on Monday.
He said that the street department does a fantastic job, but the snow removal should have been done quicker.
Service Director Scott Harvey replied that every other city in the Ohio Valley has been experiencing the same problem.
Only a few days removed from the council meeting, the Street Department has removed virtually all of the snow from the sidewalks.
