MOUNDSVILLE – The new Moundsville Sheetz gas station is quickly taking shape along W.Va. 2 across from Walmart.

A plaza of shops and a former restaurant building all were razed to make space for the new gas station. The steel structure for the building started going up not long after the site was prepared.

In his recent year end report, City Manager Rick Healy said there has been much excitement about the new business, which also offers freshly made food, drinks and more.

“The construction of Sheetz, which started in late 2025, will change the landscape of Route 2,” he said. “While most of us have wonderful memories of Elby’s, the demolition of that tired building is a huge boon to the area.”

Healy and other officials worked for about a year to get Sheetz to come to Moundsville.

“Sheetz has been rumored to be coming to Moundsville for some time and is truly a gas station to get excited about,” he said. “The increased business will generate additional Business and Occupation and Municipal Sales Tax for many years to come.”

Healy said the Sheetz project, located at 209 Lafayette Ave., will cost about $7.6 million to build. It is tentatively slated to open in the summer. The station will have space for 10 vehicles to purchase fuel at one time. The 6,132-square-foot store will also have food that can be ordered at kiosks and indoor and outdoor seating.

This Sheetz will also offer free internet and be open 24 hours a day, year-round. Between 30-35 people will be hired to work there.

According to the Sheetz website, the company is hiring for employees for the Moundsville store. The salary for “Store Team Members” is listed at $14.50 per hour and for “Store Supervisors” is listed at $17.50 per hour. Workers can get an additional $1.50 per hour for working the 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. shift.

Another new Sheetz is being constructed at The Highlands in Ohio County. That project involved tearing down an existing Sheetz to make way for a new, larger station.

Back in Moundsville, Healy said there was a total of $17.586 million in development in 2025. This included 13 different new and redevelopment projects – residential, commercial and public. In addition to the ongoing Sheetz work, other projects included the:

Ash and Elm Avenue Bridge Projects at $2.874 million;

NCF Water Conservation Project at $1.752 million;

WVU Medicine Reynolds Rapid Care Renovation at $1.478 million;

Parrs Camp Bridge Project on Jefferson Extension at $1.375 million;

City Street Paving at $524,404;

Moundsville Housing Authority Dorsey Apartments Door Replacement Project at $264,000;
