St. Clairsville Red Devils girls flag football player Divine Roby tries to break towards the endzone.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – History was made on the gridiron over the past two weekends as the St. Clairsville Red Devils officially debuted the district’s first-ever girls high school flag football team, kicking off a groundbreaking season with a perfect 6-0 record.

The program, launched in partnership with the Cleveland Browns, features a roster of 11 trailblazing athletes. Through this collaboration, the Browns have fully funded the inaugural season, providing all necessary equipment, jerseys and specialized training to help the program get off to a strong start.

The Browns have been sponsoring high school teams throughout Ohio to help grow the sport by providing the necessary equipment and scheduling games for the schools.

The coaching staff, led by husband-and-wife duo Jessica Cook and Courtney Cook, along with Jack Bence, RC Dela Cruz and OJ Diomedi, has worked tirelessly to prepare the team for competition.

“The girls have been working hard and learning the game every day,” Courtney Cook said. “We could not pass up this amazing opportunity to bring flag football to St. Clairsville.”

He added that the Red Devils made a statement in their home opener on March 22, defeating New Albany Cornerstone 31-0 in a mercy-rule victory by halftime.

The momentum continued in a tripleheader, as St. Clairsville outlasted Delaware Hayes 31-22 before earning another dominant 32-0 mercy-rule win over Newark.

The team traveled to East Liverpool on Sunday, March 29, for a three-game slate against Urban Scholars, Marion Harding and East Liverpool.

St. Clairsville opened with a 32-0 mercy-rule victory over Urban Scholars of Columbus. In the second game, they faced Marion Harding squad and secured a 25-24 win, sealed by a game-ending defensive sack from Karlee Higgins.

St. Clairsville capped off the day with a 41-19 victory over East Liverpool.

The Red Devils now sit at 6-0 heading into spring break and currently hold first place in their division.

Offensive Player of the Week honors went to Devine Roby, while Kiya Kyer earned Defensive Player of the Week recognition.
