Barnesville Pumpkin Festival president dies

Tim Rockwell, the longtime president of the Barnesville Pumpkin Festival, died last week at age 59.

The festival announced on social media over the weekend that Rockwell had died. According to his obituary, he died April 30 in Orlando.

Rockwell, a truck driver by trade, began his service with the festival by overseeing its parade for eight years. He then spent two years as the festival’s vice president before stepping into the president’s role in 2009

“For many years, Tim worked tirelessly behind the scenes and on the front lines of the festival, giving his time, knowledge, and heart to ensure its continued success,” festival officials wrote. “His commitment went far beyond the event itself–he cared deeply about this community and the people in it, and that showed in everything he did.”

The Pumpkin Festival has grown from its inception in 1964 into one of the most popular events in the Ohio Valley. Festival organizers said it welcomes around 100,000 people annually for a variety of attractions, including the immensely popular pumpkin weighing contest.

“Tim was more than just a president,” organizers wrote. “He was a leader, a mentor, and a friend to so many. His presence, guidance, and passion will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

Funeral services are pending. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Belmont County 4-H – 45422 Roscoe Road, Suite A, St. Clairsville, Ohio 43950 or Barnesville Vo-Ag – 910 Shamrock Drive, Barnesville, Ohio 43713.
