MARTINS FERRY – Husband and wife Ron and Melanie Shaw were seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on Route 7 Saturday evening.
The two were flown to UPMC in Pittsburgh, where Ron Shaw’s condition remains unknown and Melanie Shaw was reported in stable condition.
Ron Shaw is a member of the Grim Reapers Motorcycle Club, where he is known as “Click.”
Once word spread about the accident, Bethanie Clark organized a fundraiser to help the family cover medical expenses.
Clark grew up around the club because her father, Dave McConn, and brother, David McConn Jr., are members.
“I’ve known ‘Click’ for a long time. He’s known me since I was a kid, being friends with my mom [Amy McConn] and dad,” Clark said.
She added the families are so close that her mother officiated Ron and Melanie Shaw’s wedding.
Clark said her brother contacted her husband, Tex Clark, informing him the Shaws had been involved in a wreck and were being transported to a Pittsburgh hospital.
“When I found out I just felt like this is something that I needed to do,” Clark said. “I can only do what I can control and know that I would be able to do this and get it done for them so this would be one less thing that they have to worry about.”
She added her brother also called her sister-in-law, Katelyn Orr, a nurse who arrived at the scene to assist paramedics.
On Sunday, Clark announced a pancake breakfast fundraiser would be held June 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help the Shaws cover medical expenses.
Originally scheduled to take place at the Grim Reaper Shadyside Chapter clubhouse, the event was moved to Route 40 LumberJax in Belmont less than 24 hours after being announced because of overwhelming community support.
“I just put it out there last night, and the response was so large that we didn’t think that the Grim Reaper Club House in Shadyside was going to be able to host that many people. So Doug [Longenette] offered up his space to us, which we’re very grateful for,” Clark said. “My phone has been non-stop since I started posting the event. ‘Click’ drives the bus for Bridgeport School, so the support from the Bridgeport community has been amazing. The support from both Grim Reaper clubhouses in Shadyside and Dillonvale have both been incredible as well. I have had so many people reaching out, offering to buy supplies or offering to send money. It’s been a blessing.”
To help pay for supplies for the fundraiser, Clark posted her Venmo and Cash App accounts on social media seeking donations. Clark’s Venmo account is @BClark134 with the last four-digit security code 5306. Her Cash App account is $Clark0134. She added anyone interested in donating cash or checks can contact her at 740-359-5260.
The fundraiser will feature a pancake breakfast including two pancakes and a choice of two sausage links or two pieces of bacon. Chinese auctions and a 50/50 raffle also will be held. Meals will cost $20 per person or $35 per couple.
Clark said motorcycle clubs sometimes get a bad reputation because of movies and television shows, but she has seen firsthand how the club supports community fundraising efforts and events.
“I’ve been a part of the Grim Reaper family for over half of my life and they have contributed to so many causes and haven’t even thought twice about it,” Clark said. “It is really, really touching to see the community giving back to them as much as they’ve done for the communities around here. It’s totally incredible.”
She added all proceeds from the fundraiser will go directly to the family to help with medical bills, household expenses and travel costs to and from the hospital.
“We just want to make sure that those things are something that they don’t have to worry about right now while they’re going through this,” Clark said.
