Ohio AG Yost stepping down

COLUMBUS — Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced Thursday that he will resign from office effective June 7 to accept a private-sector position with the nonprofit legal organization Alliance Defending Freedom.

Yost said he will serve as the organization’s vice president of strategic research and innovation. His departure comes after more than six years as Ohio’s attorney general, a position he has held since 2019.

Prior to serving as attorney general, Yost was Ohio auditor of state and previously served as Delaware County prosecutor and Delaware County auditor.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, who has the authority to appoint Yost’s replacement, thanked the attorney general for his years of public service and said he would carefully consider who will fill the role.

“I am grateful for Attorney General Yost’s long career in public service, from serving as Delaware County auditor, Delaware County prosecutor, auditor of state and attorney general of Ohio. I wish him the best in his next endeavor,” DeWine said in a statement.

“Having served as Ohio attorney general, I know how important this office is and the great work done by its employees. I will give the appointment of someone to serve as attorney general thoughtful and deliberate consideration.”

Yost’s resignation comes less than six months before the November general election. His political future became uncertain earlier this year after he suspended his campaign for governor following the Ohio Republican Party’s endorsement of Vivek Ramaswamy in the 2026 gubernatorial race.
