BRIDGEPORT — The village of Bridgeport celebrated the nation’s 250th birthday Sunday with a block party featuring free music, games and a fireworks display at dark.

“We have a wonderful community here in Bridgeport, so we wanted to do something special for them,” Bridgeport Police Department Assistant Chief Darby Copeland said.

The party took place on Lincoln Avenue between Howard Street and National Road. It featured six different food trucks, bounce houses, a dunk tank, face painting, vendors and live music by bands like the Ron Retzer Trio.

“We’re super excited to be able to offer this,” he noted.

Copeland said it is hard to imagine what the world will be like in 50 years during the 300th anniversary celebration.

“When you think about where we are right now in America, the technology -- I can’t even imagine what it will be in 50 years,” he said. “I don’t know if we will be a minority among robots or what.”

Copeland hopes to be around for the 275th anniversary and even the 300th, though he would be 103 years old at that time, he said.

Bridgeport Mayor Norma Teasdale said she wanted to thank everyone for coming to the celebration. She noted she hopes in the future that people continue to be proud of the USA.

“I’m hoping everyone is proud of America and is a patriot for the United States,” she said. “It’s the best country there is, and I’m hoping in another 25 to 50 years from now that they appreciate as much as we do now.”
