ST. CLAIRSVILLE - Harvey Goodman Realtor and the St. Clairsville Area Chamber of Commerce are teaming up for the inaugural Harvey's Rock the Block event.
The outdoor festival will take over Main Street Thursday from 6-9 p.m. to kick off the back-to-school season.
Executive Director Lisa Kindler said she was contacted by Harvey Goodman this past January about teaming up with the chamber to provide a family fun festival as children prepare to go back to school.
"They approached us because they know that we do some wonderful events throughout the year on Main Street. So they asked for our help," Kindler said. "And with the help and the coordination of the city and the mayor [Kathryn Thalman] we were able to come up with a date and able to secure some sponsors and put this together for the community, kind of like an end of the year block party bash."
She added that the event will feature local legendary act Tongue N Cheek performing in front of the Belmont County Courthouse along Main Street.
The event also will feature a free kids zone with inflatables, rock climbing and roller skating.
Kindler said this will be the first time roller skating will be offered, with All Year Sports Galaxy providing the rink. The company previously provided the ice skating rink for the chamber's events.
"We’ve never done the roller skating rink. We’ve done the ice skating rink during the holidays. But we thought a roller roller rink would be great," Kindler said. "We originally had this plan for our American 250 birthday party but it got rained out so we thought this might be kind of a cool addition to Harvey’s Rock the Block."
She added that she thought the addition of roller skating was fitting because of the live rock music, making it a rock-and-roll kind of night.
Another addition to the event will be a back-to-school supply giveaway sponsored by Harvey Goodman and Unified Bank.
Northwest Title, Sam’s Club and Kroger also will be in attendance providing additional school supplies to families at the event.
Kindler said that if the weather doesn’t cooperate Thursday, the chamber will hand out the free school supplies at Family Fun Fest at the ECO Center on Friday from noon to 6 p.m.
"We want to make sure that all of the kiddos get those supplies prior to going back to school," Kindler said.
She added that if Thursday's event needs to be postponed due to weather, she currently does not have a rain date but will inform the public as soon as one is confirmed.
"As far as the bands and the other entertainment, we have to work with those companies to see when we can reschedule," Kindler said. "We are watching the weather closely, and we’re just hoping that everybody can say a couple extra prayers for us that the weather turns out for the best."
She added that the St. Clairsville Rotary Club will have a beer tent at the event to raise money for the club.
The event also will feature various food trucks and vendors alongside local Main Street businesses, which will be open for attendees to shop and dine.
