COLUMBUS -- A recent roundup from Policy Matters Ohio highlights several statistics involving child care capacity, wages, state taxes and household income in Ohio.
The Sept. 18 edition of the organization's "Saturday Stats," authored by Ben Stein, included the following figures:
124,876 -- The number of additional child care slots Policy Matters Ohio estimates could become available if Ohio providers operating below full capacity had enough workers to fully staff their facilities. The organization said three-quarters of the state's child care centers are operating below full capacity because of staffing shortages.
Nearly 40% -- The decline in Ohio's child care workforce since 2019, according to Policy Matters Ohio. The organization said the typical child care worker earns $14.27 per hour.
3 -- The number of states that Policy Matters Ohio said had larger declines in median wages than Ohio from 2024 to 2025. The organization noted that changes in federal data collection rules have limited the availability of state and local Census data for analyzing wage trends.
$19,000 -- The annual reduction in state income taxes that Policy Matters Ohio estimates the average Ohio millionaire will receive under the state's 2.75% flat income tax rate. The organization said taxpayers earning more than $26,050 will pay the same 2.75% rate regardless of income.
61% -- The share of Ohio capital gains that Policy Matters Ohio says went to the top 1% of households, those with annual incomes above $753,000. The organization said households earning less than $85,000 received 3% of capital gains.
