Martins Ferry library continues candidate forum tradition

MARTINS FERRY -- Giving residents an opportunity to hear directly from those seeking public office has become a tradition at the Martins Ferry Public Library, which will continue that tradition Sept. 24 with another "Meet the Candidates" session.
The forum, scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday at the library, 20 James Wright Place, will feature candidates running in the Nov. 3 general election.
The event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required.
Candidates scheduled to participate include William Redpath, a candidate for U.S. Senate; John Kulewicz, a candidate for Ohio attorney general; Don Kissick and James Mills, candidates for governor and lieutenant governor; Judge Marilyn Zayas, a candidate for Ohio Supreme Court; and Seth Walsh, a candidate for Ohio treasurer.
Local candidates scheduled to participate include Kevin Flanagan, a candidate for Belmont County Court of Common Pleas judge, and Belmont County commissioner candidates Dominic DeFelice and Frank Shaffer Jr.
The Ohio Secretary of State’s office lists Redpath, Kulewicz, Kissick and Mills, Zayas and Walsh among the candidates for statewide offices in the 2026 election. The general election is Nov. 3.
"We're going to have several different candidates there," said Anthony Orsini, director of the Belmont County District Library. "Probably most relevant to us is who is going to be replacing Jerry (Echemann) next year as county commissioner. We will have Dominic DeFelice and Frank Shaffer Jr. there."
Orsini said the library’s candidate forums provide an opportunity for residents to hear directly from people seeking public office.
City resident Richard Hord, a member of the library board, said previous forums have drawn community interest.
"We are looking forward to the Meet the Candidates," Hord said. "In the past they have been very successful and we're looking to another successful event. It's free of charge. You can't beat the price. I hope you can all attend."
