SHADYSIDE, Oh. -- On the heels of a successful fall event for the village of Shadyside, village council continued planning its next community event for the upcoming winter season during Monday's council meeting.
Mayor Mike Meintel was unable to attend the meeting, so Councilwoman Melanie Haswell stepped into the mayor’s role and was Acting Mayor for the meeting.
Additionally, members of the council discussed the "Harvest in the Village" event which took place on Oct. 17, with Haswell calling it a success and "another great festival for the town."
Regarding future events, Haswell talked about the upcoming "Hallmark Winter Festival," slated for Dec. 19. She said the event will feature a 40 x 20 ice skating rink which includes snow, skates and lights.
"It's pretty pricey," Haswell said, "So, I'm hoping everybody makes use of this."
As for where the skating rink will be, Haswell said they still need to figure it out. She originally wanted it to be on East 39th Street, but the road is not flat. Haswell said finding a good, flat location for the rink is necessary, but said the loop should prove sufficient.
The winter event will also feature ice sculpting by Chef Rocco Basil as the evening goes on. Haswell said fire pits, vendors, food trucks and a 5K race on the loop of the town.
According to Haswell, those participating in the 5K can either run or walk, going through the town on both sides.
Regarding food trucks, Councilwoman Lisa Duvall asked if there were any updates on the food truck ordinance. Haswell said there was not.
Food trucks became a contentious issue at the last Shadyside council meeting, where Holey Rollers Donut food truck owner Jeremy Pasztor said his outdoor food permit was cancelled and he received a $100 fine for operating outside Hometown Roots Salon on Oct. 2.
While Meintel said the food truck ordinance would be updated to require vendors apply two to three days ahead of when they plan to set up shop. However, the ordinance was not voted on during Oct. 12's meeting nor was it voted on during the last meeting.
(near the bottom) Haswell also wished Bellaire Mayor Robert Dodrill well and requested people to keep him in their prayers, as he is expected to undergo triple-bypass heart surgery and had to temporarily step away from the position.
Additionally, council also discussed the progress for two grant applications to the Ohio Public Works Commission -- one for street paving and another for demolishing the old public pool, which has been closed since 2015 due to being structurally unsafe.
Clerk of Council Betty Snyder asked Duvall how long it would take to await a decision on either project, with Duvall saying it's based on circumstance and could take anywhere from being quick to being a "long time."
"I would expect before the first of the year, but after the election," Duvall said.
Snyder said the pool is an eyesore for everybody who lives in the village, so she said she hopes it doesn't take long.
Council also read over a resolution to adopt Belmont County's Hazard mitigation plan, which is updated every year and is required for villages to pass to receive money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for a natural disaster or emergency. The resolution was approved unanimously.
Shadyside Police Chief Don Collette also gave a police report for the meeting. His department registered mayor’s court summons’ for disorderly conduct, noise complaints and four parking complaints. The Eastern Court logged two arrests for OVIs leading to a crash -- one into a tree and the other into a pole -- one arrest for an OVI report, one arrest for disorderly conduct and fighting and one arrest for a failure to appear warrant.
Shadyside Village Council will meet again Nov. 9 at 6 p.m. inside the Shadyside Community Center on East 39th Street.
