Students throughout Belmont County will soon be spelling W-I-N-N-E-R.

District spelling bees are starting to be held throughout the county, with every young speller setting their eyes on a berth in the Belmont County Regional Spelling Bee, to be held Thursday, Feb. 11 at the ECO Center. Those students get to the ECO Center by advancing from the spelling bees in their respective local school districts throughout Belmont County.

The winner of the regional spelling bee earns a berth in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will take place May 31-June 4 at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. The 2027 winner will follow in the footsteps of 2026 winner Addie Jackson, who qualified as an eighth grader from St. Mary’s Central School. Jackson reached the third round of the national bee.

A number of sponsors make all of this happen. Sponsors this year include The Times Leader, Wilson Furniture, Wilson Funeral Home and Cremation Services, the East Central Ohio Educational Service Center, Belmont Savings Bank, Uniglobe Ohio Valley Travel, ICR Equipment Rental, Sales and Supply, LED Transportation and the Martins Ferry Elks.
