Father Menelaos Papageorgiou, 95, former Priest of the Greek Orthodox Church of Life Giving Fountain of Martins Ferry, OH died Wednesday, July 22, 2020, in Nicosia Cyprus. God bless his soul. “Eonia tou I mnimi.”

Father Papageorgiou served in the Greek Orthodox Church of Zoodochos Peghe of Martins Ferry, for 45 years until his retirement in 2012. He served as a priest for 62 years from 1949 when he was ordained in his country of birth, Cyprus. In 1965, while serving as a priest and raising a family, he received his degree in Theology from the University of Athens and thereafter he immigrated to the United States.

Father Papageorgiou was not only well known in the Greek communities of the Ohio Valley but also to many others outside the church who have fond memories of him.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of over 63 years, Erasmia M. Papageorgiou. They were married May 8, 1949.

Father is survived by his son, Constantinos “Gus” (Patty) Papageorgiou and his daughter, Marina (Tony) Papapostolou, his four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

His funeral service was held on Saturday, July 25, 2020 in Nicosia Coypus presided by seven priests as per Greek Orthodox tradition for the funeral of a priest. He will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife of 63 years Presvytera Erasmia Papageorgiou who passed away in 2012.
